John D. Rockefeller is the founder of Standard Oil. It was established in 1870 as a corporation in Ohio. Rockefeller cornered the oil market through Standard. He started a monopoly where he would decrease his oil prices, so other businesses could go out of business, so then he could buy that business to increase his stream of revenue. John D. Rockefeller became the world's wealthiest man and a philanthropist. He first entered the oil industry by investing in a Cleveland, Ohio, refinery in 1863. In 1880s, Rockefeller basically controlled 90% of U.S. refineries and pipelines through Standard Oil. He became very powerful and also an extremely smart businessman.
